How to Mute Microphone in Windows 7

Posted by Elon B. on January 18, 2010

Occasionally I use Community Clips to create Video Tutorials for my work.  Unfortunately there is no option to mute the microphone whilst recording.

There isn’t an obvious place to mute the microphone from within Windows 7, as there is in XP and I didn’t want to have to scramble behind my machine to unplug the mic, with all the many wires connected to my machine.

Anyway, here’s how you mute the microphone in Windows 7.

  • Right Click on Speaker Icon in Taskbar Area
  • Select “Recording Devices”
  • Double click on the Active “Microphone”, or Right-Click on the active “Microphone” and select “Properties”
  • Select the Levels Tab.
  • Click on the Speaker button, to mute/unmute the microphone

Click on image below to enlarge it for a pictorial view..

Hope that helps.
