SSAS Cubes – What are Fact and Dimension Tables ?

Posted by Elon B. on December 4, 2008

When it comes to creating SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS) cubes, it helps to be able to understand what the differences are between a fact table and dimension tables.

Craig Utley has written an excellent white paper that addresses this point. It is called “Designing the Star Schema Database” and is a useful reference for those looking to start creating SSAS cubes and require some background design knowledge. It’s written for the layman, so even though the topic is relateively technical, it presented in an easy to understand manner. A good reference for budding SSAS cube builders.
